Any chance you are dual booting with windows? I have found that settings in windows can affect function in Ubuntu, as they seem to sometimes modify devices in the bios somehow. In the past, it has always been an on or off thing for me. For example, if I have wifi, the touchpad, or sound off/muted in windows, they will not function in Linux at all, even when using "modprobe" to activate from the cli. Try booting into Windows and Making sure sound is on and set to max volume.
Also, laptops like sony have a number of Keyboard function keys and other hardware buttons that control sounds at the software level. Have you checked those? I know the Vaios often also have a "sound effects" button, and this needs to be deactivated to hear sound in Ubuntu properly. Some other thoughts? What version of alsa are you using? 10.04 does not come with the latest version and may need to be upgraded for better results. Not sure if there is a newer version in the repositories yet, or not, but I think there was a newer one with 10.10. run "cat /proc/asound/version" from terminal to see.. Also, what is your output of "lspci -nn | grep Audio"? If you have more than one returned, you can select your device in Alsa with, i think, the F6 key.
