Yes, I am dual booting with windows 7, which was pre-installed on the system. The sound works perfectly on the windows 7.
This laptop doesn't have any hardware controls for sound. I check the control in windows and set them to high. I checked the settings in BIOS and there is nothing related to sound there. cat /proc/asound/version gives me this result: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23. Compiled on Feb 21 2011 for kernel 2.6.32.28-generic (SMP). lspci -nn|grep Audio gives me this result: 00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Inter Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio [8086:3b56] (rev 05) I played with the mixer pulling the bars up and down, but no results.
