I don't have a Kindle which has built on wifi which works with Amazon, but I suppose if you had pdfs or books on your drive you might want to connect by usb. I am only guessing because I two non-Kindles that I connect by usb. Maybe people use the public library and get books by Adobe Editions. My library has this service.
