I have not done what you want to do before but I still might know why some of the instructions you are seeing may differ somewhat. Over time Linux has used a couple of different bootloaders. Each one works slightly different from the others. So some of the instructions you are seeing may deal with the different bootloaders. Today you are most likely going to use Grub2, although the original Grub, and even lilo still work. I question your multiple distribution plan. You might want to look into installing just one, then any others run in a virtual machine. Linux, is Linux, is Linux after all. No distribution can do anything any of the others can't. The difference being in configurations.
