For Ubuntu proper, I read where it is best to get the updates while on LAN, then you should be able to go on with WI-FI. Usually LAN adapters are picked right up with Linux better than in Windows. In fact, I used to use Puppy Linux to get Windows drivers for LAN and mount and save the driver to later run on Windows.
In fact, you can browse the Web while testing the Live version and if you see something to save, just email yourself or save to USB.
