Really, instead of all this guessing, it would be quite helpful if you told us exactly what kind of hardware you have. Make/model and if you know, the make/model of your wireless card.
WiFi Cards, the older ones, at least, do generally work, though some still need some special handling and things like NDISWrapper. Newer wifi chips, especially the Wifi/BlueTooth Combo cards are very problematic and IME, are about 50/50 as to whether or not they work.
