I've done a little more thinking while eating lunch. Other than something screwy with initializing the superIO it could also be an interrupt problem. As soon as you initialize the serial console you will start getting interrupts to flush the output that the kernel has already generated. ...does this seem correct? I think that someone posted a kernel command line option to cause the serial port to operate without interrupts. Could someone please enlighten me on that? Thanks!
