Ok, call me stupid and then I'll tell you why my kernel was "crashing".

It wasn't crashing but it sure was having a fit trying to run the
serial port configured for 1152000 bps. ;-)
using custom command line - [root=/dev/hda6 console=ttyS0,1152000 FS_MODE=ro hda
=flash hdb=flash]
IO APIC not responding.
Jumping to boot code
I've got to leave for now but will clean up and try doing some real
work tomorrow.
