O.k. that was the piece I was missing I'll have to track that down and see.
At first glance it looks like port 0xcf9 will work on a number of chipsets,
not the sis chipsets but a lot of the others.  So it might be a good
way to make it work.  Ollie's usage of a watchdog timer makes a lot of
sense as well.
