If you want to use a root filesystem on the harddrive. It is easy for linuxBIOS to come up before the harddrive has spun up and is responding to commands. I'm not a big fan of harddrives on development boxes so I haven't seen it too often. The last time I saw it I manged to network boot the kernel before the harddrive had spun up. Eric
