It may work better with 1.13r3 (the password bug is also fixed there)

Check your /etc/inittab anyway, you should have a line like this:

id:3:initdefault

Off topic maybe, but... here's a note on how you may replace xdm with kdm
(KDE desktop manager):

(with kdm you can choose which wm to use before you login - very nice :)
