Upgrade the 1.13r8, forst of all.
Preferably, the way to switch the guis I discovered, is to simply TOTALLY
remove linuxconf first (using rpm -e, if you use RedHat), then to install
the newer version, as well as the gui rpm.
That gave me a different gui, that does not suffer from the problems you
described.
