A couple of things to check:
If your first DNS entry on the box is itself (127.0.0.1) then you need to have
a few things set:
put the machine name(s) and IP address(s) in the local /etc/hosts file,
list the box as a valid NS in the domain file,
list the IP in the Reverse domain file.

If you're looking to an outside server you might get different results or
errors on your own domain / ip subnet unless you keep a local domain and rdns
file.
