Hello Bill and everybody,
<<<
1) We should engage in real-world discussion about the
virtues of Linux (it is NOT for everyone ... let's be
candid about that when it is evident.).
>>>
I agree with you.
<<<
2) We should give informed tours of the software
packages we are most familiar with. Hopefully this
would include a good variety of programs.
>>>
This is why, I suggested an "application list".
One that focus on software that "we" know. Or at least
someone could recommend.
If I have the choice among several apps, I prefer to
try a software that someone on this list suggested
because he/she use it.
It can be someone from a lug or a co-worker.
In case of trouble, I might be able to get some help.
I was happy when I put "VNC" on the list, that
somebody told me that he is using everyday at work.
Remember, most of these people will be "new commer" to
the Linux world.
They may be "techy minded", it should be pretty easy
for them.
But they mey also be excellents users, but less "techy
minded". It does not mean they are "dumb".
I also agree with you that we should broaden or
software knowledge.
If each lug member would learn at least the basic of
just one or two applications, it would be a big help.
<<<
The biggest thing we have to offer is evidence that
there ARE plenty of knowledgeable people who ARE
willing to assist a new person get familiar with
Linux.
>>>
One way, is to ask them to come to "installfest".
<<<
Although others are compiling lists of recommended
software to demo, I will be compiling the most
exhaustive list I can of the available software.
>>>
Ok, perhaps you could add a list of "url", where
others such lists can be found, such as
"sunsite/Metalab" or "Linux.org" site.
<<<
I would appreciate it if someone from countries where
English is not dominant would compile similar lists
for their local language.
>>>
I am working on the applications list in french.
Sorry, Klingon will have to wait...
<<<
Also ... if anyone has had experiences with programs
under the various emulation programs, whether a
program worked there or not, I would appreciate
hearing about this. For instance, if you got the AOL
client running under WABI or WINE, it would be good to
let others know of this.
>>>
I plan to test "dosemu" to be ready for demo day.
I do not know for "AOL" but CompuServe run just fine
on "Doesemu".
Someone in my lug proposed to try "Wine" or "Wabi".
<<<
I think it is worthwhile to point out to people that
they do NOT have to leave all their favorite programs
behind ... that a goodly number of them "travel well".
>>>
It is an important point.
<<<
I just want to get it *all in one spot* so it can be
printed.
>>>
Good point.
Eugene
