Yup. For Phoenix we're actually hosting events just about all month long.
It would have been better to do them all the same day, but we didn't have
time to organize something like that. Also we're cheating by counting our
two monthly meetings as LDD events :).

Next time we'll put much more effort into doing something on the official
day or Deepak's gonna let the air out of my motorcycle tires ;-).

I think next time around it will be easier to set a definite day, though
I'm more in favor of a weekend or week. It would also be nice to work with
similar events such as the Linuxbierwanderung or even the normal monthly
installfests that some LUGs run.

The key is to get the word out in a positive manner of our choosing.

On the other hand, buying a mailing list and spamming people as mentioned
in the original mail is a bad idea. I don't know anything about the press
outside of Germany or the US, but imagine one can get some coverage in
most places.

One thing that should work for us (it did when we got Eric Raymond to talk
for us, 450 people on a week's notice :) is letting other user groups
know. I don't mail the user group directly, that's spam and some members
of PLUG recently had a major fit when someone else did that to us.
Instead, I mail steering committee or whatever address they give out
publicly and ask them to pass it on if it they find it appropriate. That
usually works pretty good. If I can't find a contact address for the
group, I'll usually mail someone I know in the group (I know someone in
most of the groups :) and ask the same thing. If all else fails I try the
webmaster (hasn't gotten that bad yet). No yahoo India :(. If there's
something similar try to get them to cover it in their news section :).
