TomJ's WeMaLU's LDD Event Summary
WeMaLU = Western Massachusetts Linux & Unix User's Group
On September 14 1999, the WeMaLU group put on a Linux Demo Days demonstration at the
UMass
campus center in Amherst, MA. The demonstration was a success. A lot of great
information
about Linux distributed. The message got across and our group got a lot of exposure.
We had four demo machines setup, running RedHat, Slackware, Suse, with XWindows, from
fvwm, kde and nextstep. Demoing apps from Quake, WordPerfect, Apache, Netscape, to
movie
and mp3 players.
Some general reactions to our Linux demo table:
1. "Yea that's great, I've been running linux for a while now."
2. Just how hard is Linix to learn / run ? Our general reply: It's a lot like
unix,
there may be a learning curve involved, but the more you learn the easier it gets.
3. Can I run Window apps on Linux ? My reply: Yes there are ways to do this (WINE,
etc) but Linux already comes with a lot of great apps, check this out..
4. Instant eye-candy, people seemed more impressed with movie clips in Xanim and
playing
with mp3's than looking into the server side (Apache, Samba, etc).
5. Interest in configuration help and an installfest.
6. People snapped up the Suse packages.
Overall it was a blast.
