Hi All -
We had a great time. I was participant in three events:
Monday Softpro Books, Burlington, MA
SGI was gracious enough to lend us Jeremy Allison. Thanks, Deepak
for helping to line this up. VA Linux Systems lent hardware and
donated my time as organizer. VA also provided a VArStation 28 500
Mhz Pentium-III workstation which was put up for raffle. We had a
number of highly technical browsers wander through for some excellent
conversation. The bookstore sold some extra Linux and Samba stuff.
Thursday Monadnock, NH LUG New User's Meeting, Keene, NH
This was not a Boston event but more of a New Hampshire one. VA's
Bill Okerman and I braved torrential rains to come out to Keene State
to support their event. We set up in the student union for five hours
and pitched Linux and the open source ideal. Lots of interest and
curiosity. We then tore it down, went to dinner and set up at the New
User's Meeting in the lecture hall of the Science Center. There were
about 80 people in the audience. The guest speaker was none other
than Jon maddog Hall. All of the sponsor freebies from SuSE, RedHat,
LinuxCentral, Linux Journal, Alpha Processor, Inc, etc were raffled
off followed by a grand prize drawing for another VA Linux Systems
workstation.
Saturday, Softpro Books, Burlington, MA
Softpro is an excellent technical bookstore. We were a bit late
getting started. A tree limb had come straight through the windshield
of the car I was using to transport the demo gear (a VA Linux Systems
StartX/ZP workstation with dual P-III XEON 550's! and my really shabby
486 WinNT system) and I had to call out the reserves to transfer the
stuff to Bill Okerman's car while the auto glass people were fitting a
new windshield. By the time we'd been on the air in the back of the
store for 30 minutes we had a dozen people milling around and talking
to members of the LUG. It was a pretty active scene for most of the
day. Again we're grateful to VA Linux Systems for donating a machine
for raffle, Softpro for donating the space and for all of the LUG
folks that turned out to show off the system and applications.
What worked:
We ran by the seat of the pants the first time we put it together.
I did some work on Wednesday to load up all of the stuff from the
RH6 applications CD and to make sure that all of my favorite things
were up and running.
Having a raffle allowed us to gather information about the people
that came to visit the demo. The entry forms had check boxes to
indicate if you used Linux at work or home, if you needed help getting
started with Linux, if you wanted more information about the Boston
LUG or if you wanted information about the hardware we were using for
the demo. This will give us a good base for membership expansion and
a sense for the demand for installfests.
I have some ideas on how to make it even better that I'll post once
get a few minutes to organize them all and write 'em down.
