Hi ppl,
I was finally able to get the GNOME working. It seems some library packages
were not installed. I dont know which, since I did an 'rpm -ivh --force
*.rpm' :-)
To say the least, I was _not impressed_ by GNOME. It cant open text files
on my dos pratitions and hangs up on me everytime I click the CD-ROM icon.
It isnt consistent even about logging out ... sometimes I can and sometimes
not. Also it seems to lack useful tools like the Appfinder in KDE.
Also, the open windows are not represented on the "panel". And for some
mysterious reason, if I press the cross on one window, all are closed (?)
Are these shortcomings inherent in the GUI? Or have I missed out on some
configuration files? The only changes I made were to the $HOME/.Xclients
file and the xdm entry in /etc/inittab.
The only thing that GNOME scores is in a very attractive interface and good
documentation.
Sameer.
