I recently had the same problem.... Though the error was slightly different
... I was unable to mount root ...adn a few other partions...
Even my CD would not respond from Linux.
As it turned out my FAT was corrupted ...I used the seagate disc wizard
(only for seagate HDD) & updated my MBR..
After that everything was OK.
