Don't worry. This should work (if you are actually talking about the root
password, and not the one in the lilo.conf file)

At bootup time, in front of LILO:, type
<your-linux-image-name  ... probably "linux"> 1

The "1" implies single user mode. You get a shell prompt without any
login/password screen.

Change the password using "passwd".

Hope it solves your problem.

If it's the password in lilo.conf you've forgotten, then, let us know
again. Then it's a different sequence.
