        That depends on the distribution. Debian will still ask for the
root password, as it should be! It is one of the great security risks of
Redhat (at least 6.0) You can try to type the following at the LILO
prompt:

linux runlevel 1 init=/bin/bash

If you have a LILO password (as I do, to avoid the above situation), you
will have to boot from a floppy or a second hard disk.
