The reason should be pretty simple. The sound output server xmms might have
used would be esd under Gnome, which does not run under KDE by default.

When you switched back to gnome arts sound daemon had probably captured the
pcm device.

The simplest way would be to use esd in both gnome and kde.   Disable arts
in kde. run esd and your sound should be back.

Its indeed scary to program without music :)
