Personally, I think Java scales up pretty well. Specially Personally, I don't think Java is as good as it is billed to be. I will wait for the opening of the JVM, but till then GNU classpath is what you would want to use. I have heard good things about Java 1.5, but I would rather wait for someone else to show me that it works well in production, without the memory bloat.
