Are you using the HP/Compaq power supply?

I have tried a variety of third-party power supplies and none of them
can provide a sustained 130W of power (the peak on my R3000 is quoted
as 150W). The Targus 120W adapter will last for a few weeks, maybe 3
months, before giving up. The symptom in this case, though, is that
the power LED that is on the power brick will go off. Apparently, this
laptop (and the power supply) have some kind of circuit protection
built in.

This wasn't usually a problem except overnight. I use my laptop as my
primary computer at home, and then I take it on the road with me for
business travel. It is configured to kick off cron jobs at 4:15am (I
run a "find | sort" every night so that I can grep the output instead
of running find dynamically -- I do this instead of using locate(1)
because this technique works on my AIX and HP-UX boxes as well).

Anyway, my theory is that the drive usage at 4:15am causes an increase
in the power being pulled from the power supply, causing the Targus to
shutdown. Then the laptop runs on battery until it dies. :(

I have not had this problem with the original Compaq power supply. I
eventually gave up trying to find an after-market version and just
bought a second Compaq unit.
