I'm using SuSE Linux 10.0 and have not been able to get
suspend-to-RAM to work, though I haven't done anything to investigate
why. Like you, suspend-to-RAM fails on resume (if one enables it
through YaST's system --> powersave control) with a blank screen, solid
disk light and flashing caps-lock light.
I've had better luck with suspend-to-disk, but there seems to be an
intermittent problem where the system clock doesn't get its time set
back correctly after resuming. I'm still playing with it, but it seems
suspend-to-disk works best when in init state 3. (I don't think I have
to unload the nvidia driver, though, if it is already loaded.)
