I spent a few hours on suspending this morning. I tried to isolate the
problem areas. I am running Debian Sarge 64 bit, kernel 2.6.13.4,
STOCK kernel suspend --NOT patched with the other suspend.

The commands i used came from kernel docs:
echo shutdown > /sys/power/disk; echo disk > /sys/power/state

Here is what I have discovered:

I had the most success when booted into single user mode (runlevel 1)
without the nvidia module or ndiswrapper module loaded. I had a success
rate of 90%.

One thing I started doing was waiting at least 5 minutes in between the
suspend and the restore. That seemed to help. I think there might be
timing issues when restoring immediately.

Booting to runlevel 3 even without nvidia and ndiswrapper DOES NOT WORK.
There must be services that cause problems. I didn't feel like
spending more hours on tracking down the offending services.

Adding the nvidia module gave mixed results--sometimes it would work and
other times it wouldn't. I tried both waiting and not waiting in
between restores.

I didn't even make it to actually running X bc the stability is so poor
at this point in the testing.
