As far as I know, all the new Compaqs use ATI chipsets, which suck. I had an R4000 and ended up returning it to HP. Instead I bought an R3240 brand new from someone on eBay. works great with Ubuntu-64 Breezy. Were I in your position I would see if I could find an R3xxx somewhere.
