I have an R3240. I bought three 12-cell batteries for it. I got two on
eBay and one from someplace on the web. I did not pay more than
$100 for any of them, including shipping. Two were genuine HP and
the third was some other label. No problems with any of them so
far.

I keep all three charged. When I need to go to the university (the
only place I normally use the laptop away from home), I take the
computer with one of them inside and the other two as well. The
original 8-cell battery sits on a shelf, never used. I don't ordinarily
carry the adapter with me. The two extra 12-cell batteries weigh
less than the adapter. Each gives me about 2.5 hours, so the three
in total give me over seven hours of usage. That's enough for all
day. On the rare occasions when I might need more than seven
hours, I take the adapter instead of two extra batteries.
