What if you suspend when you do NOT use an external monitor? Can you resume successfully then? Are you running a 32-bit or a 64-bit kernel?

When I suspend (just using the Presario's LCD), upon resume I see exactly the same symptoms you are describing: loss of display, nonresponding keyboard, but the computer responds to pings. I run 64-bits (currently 2.6.14, but the situation concerning suspend has not really changed on this laptop since 2.6.11). I vaguely remember being able to resume successfully after suspending to disk running SuSE 9.0 or 9.1 (64 bits) back in the fall of 2004. But I am quite certain I was running the nv, not the nvidia driver for the display. Furthermore, the laptop I had back then was a real lemon, which HP replaced, so there may be slight differences in the hardware with the one I have now.
