Since you are not afraid of sodering, I'll tell you how I fixed the same
problem. Just go through your junk box and find an old jack that will fit
the power adapter but not a one of those surface mount ones (the ones that
have an external casing). I found one off my old pda palm m515 charger
that was perfect for the job. Just soder the +/- correctly onto the
motherboard after drilling a tiny hole on the side of your computer and
putting the cable through it so it looks nice :). All I have is a tiny
plug that dangles out but it works like a charm, even better than the
original because it is more flexible. I don't know why compaq din't do
this at the start just so not too much force is exerted on the plug. It'll
also make it easier to replace if it were to break for the end user. They
just want to suck money out of you thats the whole reason. The way I
drilled the hole was to use the drill bit that comes with the printer
refill kits (its a perfect tight fit for the plug). Oh year remember to
tie a knot b4 u sodder so u can't yank it off the motherboard.
