Hello all,

For the first time, I actually got the ATI drivers (fglrx) to install properly
with the kernel module on my laptop (Compaq R4025CA, ATI Xpress 200M), so I
assume that 3D acceleration is enabled..

I used driver version 8.23.7 from the ATI site and generated packages for
Debian/Sid and installed them.. All seemed to work fine, except I had to
change my bios settings to disable the on-board memory of the video card (UMA
only I think).  Without that, X would just start with a black screen.

$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON XPRESS 200M Series SW TCL Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5695 (8.23.7)

$ fgl_glxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
645 frames in 5.0 seconds = 129.000 FPS
691 frames in 5.0 seconds = 138.200 FPS
699 frames in 5.0 seconds = 139.800 FPS
661 frames in 5.0 seconds = 132.200 FPS

$ glxgears
4406 frames in 5.0 seconds = 881.172 FPS
4418 frames in 5.0 seconds = 883.492 FPS
4423 frames in 5.0 seconds = 884.420 FPS

Those numbers seem pretty low, and when I tried Planet Penguin Racer (formerly
tuxracer) I got a measly 6 FPS with everything turned down.

So is the driver just that garbage?  Or am I still missing a step? What kind
of performance are other people getting with the latest ATI drivers on this
video card?

Thanks,
Leo
