[used] At home i have a Y2000 Dell P3-600Mhz with 256M RAM running Ubuntu-6-LTS Linux with FVWM. Emacs/mh-e/Lynx/xterm run great; Firefox runs fine as far as i've noticed the occasional time i pull it up on that machine; I don't bother to try out OpenOffice on that (tho on the same hardware i used to run OOo-1.x/RH-8, usable but not stellar).
[new] If we are interested in trying our hand at absolute minimum cost with new hardware... the HiVision miniNote has USB connectors which could be used with fullsize keyboard and normal mouse - does it have VGA out so one can connect it to normal monitor? http://www.gadgetreview.com/2008/09/the-98-hivision-mininote-laptop.html I'm pretty much assuming there that "everyone" has a monitor on hand, but if not, I have an IBM PS/2 Color Display available at zero price to the first taker who comes to my office to pick it up. IIRC 1024x768. Anyhow, if you do try such a setup - may i please ask a favor - after using it for a month please send a review to this list. Randall
