In my recent thread, ubuntu questions, I discussed the problems with
software RAID on ubuntu.

I'm still interested in using ubuntu for my office desktop system. I
back up important data every night to a hard drive connected via usb.
It's got it's own separate power supply; I mount it, back up to it, and
unmount it. So maybe I don't even need software RAID. In which case
I've got two 500GB drives to use. (They're brand new drives, Samsung
HD502IJ)

How about creating a logical volume with LVM, and using the entire TB?
Safe?

How about using the second drive as just a second storage drive?

How about using it as in-the-system backup, but only mounting it when
I'm actually doing the backup and then unmounting it?

Safe vs unsafe compared to what I do now (software RAID, nightly
backups)? 500GB is really enough space for me; on my current system,
used since Mandriva LE 2005 came out, I've only used 57G of space.
