So I have written up a wiki page on how to do this. It's at

http://wiki.knownelement.com/index.php/Data_Ownership

backups/security/monitoring (work in progress. will be done by end of
week as I'm presenting to UUASC-OC on Monday about these topics):

http://wiki.knownelement.com/index.php/BlueJacket (linked to from above
page)

I want everyone to be able to host their own data. I've used many
different technologies/products/services to do just that over the years.
I've settled on the things outlined in that wiki page. It was a gradual
process, moving over slowly and morphing into what it was today. Read
the presentation
http://www.knownelement.com/static/presentations/data-ownership-uuasc-oc-03082010.pdf
to see where I was last year. The wiki pages document where I am today.

Well the micro instances are pretty cheap. I'll include costs of various
providers in my upcoming thread on hosting costs.

Preview; fully at home is not sufficient. one needs a hybrid model
utilizing some sort of virtual host.
