Evolution is a wonderful piece of software. No argument there. Evolution stores email in a propriety format, and as far as I can figure out Googling, the basic structure is one huge file. Many of my folders are well over 1G in size (some approximately 2G in size) and some users have reported both instability and inherent slowness when using Evolution for such large folders. So no, I'm not considering Evolution. I'm looking at Balsa. http://pawsa.fedorapeople.org/balsa/features.html > > If I install gnome on my current system (running openSuSE but I don't > > think it matters) I'll be able to log in on both and move data between > > the alarm and email packages. > > Jeff, you can still run that KDE alarm app if you want. Yes, in theory it works. In practice, actually doing it shows that you end up with almost all of KDE, and since you're actually running it from within Gnome, a great deal of the instability. And then you have issues with how Kalarm displays. Tried that too. KAlarm is very tied to how it displays; on Gnome it didn't end up in the Dock where I needed it, and under some versions of Gnome it didn't allow me to 'save' certain open alarms on a specific desktop when keeping multiple desktops open at the same time; my workflow requires that. On one Gnome based distribution (sorry, I don't remember wich one) it didn't even put a frame around the window; all I could do was delete it. Couldn't move it. I'd rather make the move once, and then use native apps; I use my OS as a tool; I'm trying to get away from having to worry about issues with it. > Now, to migrate data from a KDE app to its equivalent Gnome app, it's > very much dependent on the apps themselves: The email clients use Maildir and will be relatively easy to move data; if I'm lucky just move/rename the base directory. Kalarm uses a standard calendar format; perhaps a bit more complex to move. Note I wrote "I'll be able to log in on both and move data between the alarm and email packages." I didn't write "Will I". This I've already researched. But thanks for your take. > Otherwise, I think you're looking at a manual transfer of data. Not fun. I'm willing to do the one-time manual migration. > Nope, no instability. Feel free to just leave it, as long as > Randall's comment holds true (i.e. you have plenty of disk space for > it). Not at all; I'm happy to see them; it shows me I may be on the right track. Randall's reply, while valuable, left me without that critical piece of information about the whole procedure. I've decided I'm going to try an update to Kubuntu 11.10 first; Kubuntu does seem to be getting a bit better each time, and with all the changes due in Gnome over the next years, I'd rather stay with KDE if I can. Be sure to ready my new thread; starting it in a moment <smile>.
