I'm a child of the 90's. I use Mac OS X and Xcode to build things. I avoid makefiles though I have gotten down and dirty with the command line and manual building on several occasions. A lot of Linux developers find that they really like Ubuntu because it handles so much of the administrative tasks for them - it leaves more time for writing code. Ultimately it's up to you, but be aware that Ubuntu is a massively popular and very well supported distribution, and is the single most widely used distribution by a significant margin. All that use and popularity translates to a brutally well-tested environment that is remarkably resilient because it has been put through Hell on so many different platforms and by so many different users.
