I am not sure if I understand you.

You say that your machine can't boot from flash drives, but then say that
usb hard drive may work, but are too expensive. Can you BIOS handle booting
from usb? If so, then a usb pendrive should work as well as a usb hard
drive. This is what is confusing me.
