It is semantics and very political/ controversial. Ubuntu is Linux
without the GNU. However it is no different from Debian in many
respects which calls itself GNU/Linux. The folks at GNU and FSF like
the term GNU/Linux and many will point it out that we should not call
it Linux. I call it what the developers call it. In this case it is
just Ubuntu. If you use it as a name Linux is not included, so it
becomes just Ubuntu 10.04. You could say that Ubuntu is a Linux
distribution, but never that Debian is a Linux distribution or you
risk offending the thought police. It would be a GNU/Linux
distribution. It does not matter in the end. It is just a name.
Welcome to our world where people can divide over what to call
something. If you want you can call it GNU/Linux, just remember that
Linux and GNU/Linux are hot button topics for some people.

If you want to be accurate Ubuntu is an operating system. Linux is the
kernel. GNU libraries are used to get Ubuntu running. The GNU folks
would like to get some respect, but unfortunately chose a dumb name
than many people won't use. GNU/Linux is just not marketable or even
likeable as a term. It reeks of political correctness at the expense
of usability.

I only pointed this out because it is unusual to refer to Ubuntu even
as Ubuntu Linux and the Ubuntu GNU/Linux is more than a mouthful. When
you start adding 10.04 and Lucid Lynx it can be a bit much. :)

I hope that you are now watching your avis and mpegs.
