Why "sadly" no? NTFS is not a good file system. It is too heavy maintenance. Windows needs a good file system and Linux has several to choose from.
As for installing a distro to ntfs, look into pendrivelinux.com. You can install many Linux distros to a flash drive formatted to FAT32, so you should be able to do it using NTFS using the same techniques.
