I don't think it's a linux specific problem, but I think you need to know what
you actually did. I would need more specific information to give a specific
answer.

Here are some general hints:

I think the first thing you should do is make sure you didn't delete the actual
file rather than just the symlink. Do you know the location of the file or
directory you linked to? Is it still there?

If it is gone, then you will need to restore it from a backup before making a
link to it.

If it is still there, then you can easily re-create the link. Since I don't
know your distro or the GUI you are using, I'll just describe how to do it
using the command line on a generic distro.

I'll assume the following:

1) Your home directory is /home/patrick. This varies from distro to distro,
but you should know what it is.

2) Your desktop directory is /home/patrick/Desktop. This also varies from
distro to distro.

3) The file or directory you originally linked to was /home/patrick/target .

4) The general form of a symbolic link command is:

ln -s <existing file, or "target"> <link file>

So, to recreate the link, you just type the following at the command line, where
"%" is your prompt:

% ln -s /home/patrick/target /home/patrick/Desktop/target

Hello,

I have created and deleted a program symbolic link on the desktop.
I have heard this is a LINUX specific problem and now the file
manager
cannot copy or paste or execute or basically anything with new
programs
or even files that have symbolic links. Any experience with this
situation ?
How in the world do I clear this up ? I need to backup some things
and
the symbolic link associated files are generating "operation not
permissible"
messages in the file manager do to when I deleted a symbolic link on
the
desktop. It really messes something up when you delete a symbolic
link on the desktop.

Thanks,

Patrick
