Debian is worth a look, but it isn't for everybody. The community is
prickly for newbies and while it is stable that comes at price.
Everything is old from the kernel to the applications. If you can live
with those things then Debian is worth considering. Also the next
version will have proprietary blobs removed from the kernel which
could mean less compatibility as many open source drivers have less
functionality and some just do not exist. Debian means that you have
to buy into their philosophy or you don't count. He should know it up
front rather than finding it after going to an effort to install.
