If you still have problems I would suggest that you try with a live CD to copy your personal files in to another directory (not part of the Ubuntu system) or external hard disk or USB stick and then reinstall Ubuntu 9.10 in the same partition that it is installed now. You may wish to consider the ArtistX version of Ubuntu. It is available in 9.10 and you can get it from: http://www.artistx.org/site2/ Keep in mind that ArtistX is a fully loaded Ubuntu and the iso file must be burned in to a DVD. You will love ArtistX, I have it installed in a very old Pentium IV computer with min RAM and a partially broken hard disk and it works like a charm. If the Ubuntu live CD does not allow you to save in other directories then get Puppy linux of Slax and burn a Live CD (CD is more that enough, they are both very small), you will have access anywhere. You reinstall as usual from the Live CD, just make sure you find the name of the partition where Ubuntu is presently intalled. Use gparted if there are no other ways (I think gparted is included in either Puppy or Slax) or get a separate gparted iso and burn a CD, it is always handy.
