One thing that helps with my Ubuntu is on start up to select the first recovery mode, wait till it comes up with a new screen and select "Fix broken packages" or something like that. It may ask you if you agree to download some MBs, type y. At the end although you will select to start again in normal mode. It may end up in terminal only view. Type sudo reboot, it will ask you for your password and your user name and if you are luckky your computer will be much better. Good luck
