Is VirtualBox really significantly slower?
Bummer. It was so easy to set up, too. How much performance am I losing?
Basically, I have an app that requires RH Enterprise, so I run CentOS on my
Mandriva box using VirtualBox. It's a visualization program, and I noticed
that some of the volume rendering was a little slow, but I assumed that was due
to my processor, and not to my virtualizaton...

Hi,
Are there any free open source virtualization software available that can
be installed and configured on CentOS or Ubuntu?

VirtualBox OSE has a nice GUI and is easy to set up. It's not the
fastest though.
Xen virtualization is wicked fast, but it requires custom kernels, so
it's limited to Linux and a few versions of BSD. I think there was a
way of running a Win32 guest, but I can't track it down.
The way I do things, I use Xen-based hosting providers because Xen
affords (much) greater speed and disk I/O than does VirtualBox. When
prototyping application servers locally, I always use VirtualBox
because it's simpler to use. As long as you don't anticipate running
into any disparity between the two different kernel types, you should
be fine. If you're properly encapsulating your application (ie using
unistd.h instead of custom kernel code whenever possible) then you
shouldn't have an issue.
I also like VMWare Fusion on my Mac. Sure, it costs money, but there's
no easier way to virtualize a Windows guest with proper integration -
which has saved my bacon on several occasions.
