I am attempting to install an up-to-date flash player on my Ubuntu
system. I downloaded and unzipped the .tar file successfully. Now I
have a .tar and am unsure what to do with it.

Two questions:

1. How do I "unpack" the tarball? I used

$ tar x install_flash_player_10_linux.tar

but it took so long that I figured something was wrong and aborted
with Ctrl-C.

2. Where should I put the unpacked directory? The .tar file downloaded
to my desktop by default and is still there. There must be a more
appropriate/standard place to put such things, though. Where?
