I've always done it the other way -- run Windows in VirtualBox on top of Linux.
I've never tried running Linux on top of Windows using VirtualBox. But then,
I almost never run Windows any more; I only boot it up when I want to make sure
a presentation I've converted from LibreOffice to PowerPoint displays correctly.

Is there a down side to doing it the way you suggest? It always seems to me
that Windows has been a resource hog, not too fast, and does some intrusive
surveillance; somebody always seems to be phoning home when I run Windows.
Would running Linux in virtualbox bypass much of this, or would you just be
giving Linux the efficiency of Windows?

But, now that you mention it, It seems to me that if the down side is small, using
VirtualBox would be a really great way to "introduce" onself to Linux without
disturbing the Windows installation...
