Unlike windows viruses, a Linux virus will take some significant effort to get it to run and then once it does run, damage is limited to that user's home folder since by default, the user doesn't have super user privileges to system files unless requested.
Then you have the executable bit, if not set, the script/program will not run. This bit MAY stay if the file was packed into a tar or zip file and will be lost if saved to a non-Linux file system.
