You use the root account for everything? This is highly inadvisable. You should use your user account for everything and only use root as needed. Using root for everything is asking for trouble. Viruses are the least of your problems. Let me count the ways you can mess up your computer. Also a malicious person could use a script, install a key logger and steal your identity.
