Great question Ray. Honestly, I didn't learn Linux from a book so I am not
much help. I did purchase Running Linux (4th edition) back in the day as a
reference. I might suggest finding the latest edition because it is in a
logical sequence. But you'll find that the internet is a great resource
with blog posts, how-to videos, and even all the man (manual or help)
pages. tldp.org is a great site for information. I'd dare to say that most
people start using Linux and then find references for when things don't
work as expected, or they want to do something new with it. You might want
to consider getting Linux+ certified, as it should be able to teach you the
basics you are looking for. Hope you can find a book that works for you.
Feel free to ask questions here in the LUG.
