I've not seen that behavior from a 'zip' command -- I'd like to know some
details about what OS, where you're running this, etc -- then we can help you
do what you were trying to do in the first place.
To fix this, Assuming that you do NOT intend to have any files with a .gz
extension on the server, go to the web folder via command line again, and run
this command:
find . -type f -name '*.gz' -exec gunzip {} \+
That will decompress them and restore their original names.

Subject: [lug:18148] Disaster: help desperately needed to undo a zip command

Hi all
I'm a novice linux user and I'm in a bit of a pickle.
I tried to create a single .zip file of a www directory (web folder) via the
command line. Firstly I CD'd into the www folder, then ran the following
command (as seen here):zip archivefile1 *
All this did though was compress and re-name every file in the web folder (inc.
files in sub-directories) with the accompanying .gz extension. Obviously the
whole website is kaput as a result!
All the files are still there though, so is there any command to basically
un-do all this and restore things the way they were?
God, I hope so!
